Hey Katrien 👋

Katrien has been working at JBC, part of the Claeys Retail Group, for nine years. Home to Belgian brands such as Mayerline and CKS. Her role as Happiness Officer came about after a well-being survey of all employees highlighted the strong need for initiatives around well-being.

👉 Making happiness a priority

Katrien looks at it broadly and focuses on complete work-life balance. "Workplace wellness for us means that employees can work happily, healthily and safely, but also go home like that," she says. "We want to create an environment where employees can relax and be resilient. This is all the more important given the high workload in the fashion industry."

👉 A structured wellness program

In 2021, JBC conducted a well-being survey of its employees. "The results showed that the workload is incredibly high. Unfortunately, we can't do much about that - we can't reduce the stress people experience - but we can provide employees with tools to better manage that stress." And from that followed the MindFuel project, which focuses on four key areas: Move, Balance, Chill and Connect. With a range of activities such as bootcamps, yoga sessions and "blind lunches.

👉 Engage leadership

JBC is a family business and that sporting spirit is deeply rooted in it. "Our owners, Bart and Ann Claeys, are both avid athletes," says Katrien. "They strongly believe that a healthy mind in a healthy body leads to happy employees." They practice what they preach! Ann even gives Ashtanga Yoga workshops to her colleagues. Their active involvement motivates employees to participate in the various initiatives, making well-being in the workplace a shared responsibility.

👉Technology is your friend

"We set up a program with FitBits for colleagues who signed up for this. This allowed them to better understand when and why they were experiencing stress, which led to more control over stressful moments. In addition, the project served as an introduction for colleagues to discover new sports and learn breathing techniques. This helped, for example, to calm down more during peak moments."

👉 Choose all-round sustainable solutions

Implementing Dripl Refill Points was a natural step for JBC, especially with their focus on health as well as sustainability. "Dripl has since replaced all of our previous soft drink dispensers. In our fashion environment, we pay close attention to sugar and calorie intake, and the Dripl Flavors without added sugars matched this perfectly. Especially the flavor ginger-lime is going fast!" says Katrien with a smile.

👉 Build an inclusive work culture

"A big challenge is to create activities that appeal to all 240 employees in Houthalen and the 50 in our satellite office in Vilvoorde," Katrien explains. "We want to make sure the initiatives are valuable for everyone. We regularly organize after-work drinks, but we also want to reach those who don't always attend them."

📝 Key Takeaways for your team or office

  • Make wellbeing a priority: Make sure employees can work and leave happy, healthy and safe. Dare to look inside and outside the office walls.
  • Conduct regular wellness surveys: This helps understand employee needs and develop targeted initiatives. Feedback, baby!
