Hey Simon 👋

Simon is Group Sustainability Officer at Cordeel, a family-owned company with some 2,000 employees across seven European countries. He explains Cordeel's commitment to employee well-being with the clear ambition, "We want to become the happiest company to work for and with."

Simon sees his role partly as a bridge between HR and employees: "My goal is to provide input from a sustainability standpoint, so that we're not just concerned with safety, but also the broader aspects of well-being." This integration of sustainability and well-being is essential to the organization's holistic approach.

👉 Happy employees= Happy customers

Simon begins with Cordeel's core idea: "We actually want to create a work environment where our employees can show their best selves. Happy employees ultimately make for happy customers." This vision is deeply rooted in the Cordeel culture and is the basis for their wellness initiatives.

👉 Customization is key

At Cordeel, they have a mix of office and site employees. "The office environment requires different wellness initiatives than construction sites, so customization is essential," Simon explains. This can be as simple as flexible working hours for the office, which is trickier for people on the construction site.

Simon emphasizes, "We need to make sure that everyone, whether you work in a yard or an office, has access to the appropriate resources."

👉 Accessible to all

To ensure that all employees can participate in wellness initiatives, Cordeel has employed some technological help. Simon says, "We work with a sports app, so everyone can participate, even our employees abroad." This makes the program accessible to everyone, regardless of their location. Specific initiatives for construction site employees are also offered, such as fitness leasing and team-building activities appropriate to their work environment.

👉 Focus on mental health

Cordeel has always focused on safety, but Simon explains that they have also started to expand wellness: "We want to ensure not only physical safety, but also the mental well-being of employees." This includes offering health checks and the "Fit at Cordeel" program, which focuses on both physical and mental health.

👉 Measure your impact

Simon explains how they measure and defend the impact of wellness initiatives to management: "When defending wellness initiatives, we make a link to corporate goals and quantify the impact, not only on people but also on sustainability." By linking the initiatives to measurable outcomes, they demonstrate the value to both employees and the company.

👉 A mix of sustainability and well-being

"We chose Dripl as a sustainable alternative to soft drinks. Not only is it healthier, but it also turned out to be a financially smart move. When we introduced Dripl, we noticed that some employees were reluctant at first. Many of them were used to their sugary drinks and feared they were missing something," Simon says. "But over time, we saw that employees responded positively and embraced the Dripl flavors. It shows that change sometimes takes a while, but can work out well in the end."

📝 Key Takeaways for your team or office

  • Customize your initiatives: Make sure wellness initiatives fit the specific working conditions of your employees.
  • Quantify your impact: Measure the effects of wellness initiatives and link them to corporate goals to build management support.
  • Ensure accessibility: Use technology to make wellness initiatives accessible to all employees, regardless of location.
